พญาเล็บครุฑถือเป็นไม้มงคลหายากที่เป็นที่เสาะหาในหมู่นักสะสม ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยเมล็ดเป็นไปได้ยากสำหรับผู้ไม่ชำนาญ ต้นเล็กๆก็เลี้ยงรอดยาก การขยายพันธุ์ที่ง่ายที่สุดคือ ปลูกต้นที่ติดดอกติดเมล็ดในพื้นที่ที่เหมาะสม จะเกิดต้นกล้าต้นเล็กๆขึ้นใต้ลำต้นเต็มไปหมด ก่อนที่ต้นแม่จะเหี่ยวเฉาตายไปและนำต้นเล็กที่เกิดใต้ต้นมาขยายพันธุ์ต่อไป (บางคนกล่าวว่าเมล็ดเป็นไม้งอกข้ามปี ผู้เขียนเพาะมาหลายสิบเมล็ดไม่เคยงอกต้นเลย)

ลักษณะ
เป็นไม้พุ่มอายุสั้น มีลักษณะคล้ายต้นมะเขือแต่ไม่ใช่วงศ์มะเขือกลับเป็นพืชวงศ์งา ความสูงของต้นตั้งแต่0.25-1.5ม.
- ลำต้น อวบกลมมีขนเล็กๆปกคลุม
- ใบ รูปหัวใจขอบจักมีขนเล็กๆปกคลุม ขนาด15-20ซม.(คล้ายใบมะเขือ)
- ดอก เป็นรูประฆัง กลีบดอกสีขาวม่วง (คล้ายดอกงา) ความกว้างปากดอก 1-2 ซม. ยาว 5 ซม. ด้านในดอกมีจุดสีเหลือง
- ผล เปลือกแข็งหุ้มมีสีน้ำตาลถึงดำ ปลายผลงอเป็นตะขอคล้ายกรงเล็บสัตว์มีความแหลมคม
การที่พืชสร้างเมล็ดมาในลักษณะนี้ทางนิเวศวิทยาเพื่อการเกาะเกี่ยวไปกับหนังหรือขนสัตว์ที่มาสัมผัสเพื่อที่จะได้พาเมล็ดดังกล่าวไปร่วงหล่นและแพร่พันธุ์ไปยังสถานที่อื่นได้

traditional healers used M. annua in the treatment of epilepsy, inflammation, sore throat, burns, itching, skin affections and tuberculosis. M. annua contains alkaloids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, flavonoids, anthocyanins, amino acid, steroids and phenols. The researcher scientifically documented various pharmacological activities such as anthelmintic, analgesic, antipyretic, antibacterial, anti convulsant, antifertility, antinociceptive, antioxidant, CNS depressant, antidiabetic and wound healing activity of this plant. The reported activities make the plant in great interest among scholars to determine the mechanism of pharmacological activities of crude extracts.
In India, plants are being used by the large number of population (about 80 %) living in rural as well as urban areas for various purposes such as food, medicine, healthcare, clothing, shelter, agriculture,etc. It is the most affordable and easily accessible source of treatment. It has been reported that about 2500 plant species serve as regular sources of medicine in India. During the last few decades there has been an increasing interest to the study of medicinal plants and their traditional use in distinct parts around the world .Among different medicinal plants M. annua are used in Indian traditional medicine and in folklore for many diseases. The leaves and fruits are the biologically active part of M.annua. M. annua belongs to family Martyniaceae (or Pedaliaceae), is a well-known small herbaceous annual plant, distributed throughout India. It is commonly known as the Cat`s claw or Devil`s claw refers to the inner woody capsule which splits open at one end into two curved horns or claws. They produce strange seed pods that attach to the feet and legs of large animals, and include some of the largest hitchhiker fruits in the world. In Ayurveda, the plant is known as kakanasika, which is being used in Indian traditional medicines for epilepsy, inflammation, tuberculosis (applied locally to the tuberculosis gland at the neck), sore throat, wound. Fruits are useful in inflammation and burns. Seeds oils are used in itching and skin affections. The fruit of M. annua is also used as the local sedative. Documentation of M. annua used as traditional medicines is needed so that the knowledge can be preserved, and the utilized plants conserved and used sustainable.
