Genus: Magnolia Few species can match the elegant drama of this specimen in full bloom. It has luminous, pale yellow, cup-shaped flowers to 6 inches across that seem to glow on the bare branches in late spring.
Care: Grow in moist, well-drained, preferably acidic to neutral soil in sun or partial shade; magnolias do not tolerate wet feet. Magnolia flowerbuds are susceptible to late-season frosts; shelter large-leaved species from windy locations. Prune trees and deciduous shrubs in late winter or late summer to prevent bleeding of sap; prune minimally to maintain a healthy framework.
Propagation: Sow seeds in autumn or stratify to hasten germination. Root softwood cuttings in early summer. Magnolias can be layered in early spring, grafted in winter, and propagated by bud in summer.

This genus comprises some of the most famous garden and park plants. It contains flowering, evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees. They bear spactacular, large and fragrant flowers in early spring, on bare branches, in the case of deciduous species. For practical reasons, they are divided into five divisions, according to their bloom form:
1) Disk-shaped flowers
2) Cup-shaped flowers
3) Star-shaped flowers
4) Goblet-shaped flowers
5) Disk and cup-shaped flowers
Plant magnolias in deep, humus-rich, acid or alkaline soils, in full sun or partial shade and in wind-protected sites.
Plant aline or in groups and rows.
Propagate typical species by seeds after a pregermination treatment that consist of cold-moist germination and scarifying at 21 C (70F) of their water-impermeable, waxy coats. Keep in mind, though, that they take up to 20 years to flower.
Propagate cultivars by semi-woody cuttings in summer, or even better, by layering or air layering.

Development: 'Galaxy' is an F1 hybrid selection resulting from a 1963 cross between Magnolia liliflora 'Nigra' and M. sprengeri 'Diva'. 'Galaxy' flowered at 9 years of age from seed. The cultivar name 'Galaxy' is registered with the American Magnolia Society. Released 1980.
Significance: Magnolia 'Galaxy' is unique in form and flower among cultivated magnolias. It is a single stemmed, pyramidal, tree-form magnolia with excellent branching habit. Galaxy flowers 2 weeks after early parent M. 'Diva', late enough to avoid most late spring frost damage. Adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions.
Description: Height and width: 30-40 feet tall and 22-25 foot spread. Twenty four feet in height with 7 inch trunk diameter at 14 years. Moderate growth rate.
Habit: Single-trunked, upright tree with narrow crown and ascending branches.
Foliage: Deciduous with large leaves (to 8.8 inches long and 4.4 inches wide), medium green above and light green beneath.
Flower: Red-purple, profuse, slightly fragrant blooms (11-12 tepals) up to 8-10 inches when fully open. Blooms appear before leaves. Partially sterile, may occasionally produce fruit and viable seed.
Culture: Adaptable to wide range of soil and cultural conditions, including sod culture. Grows best in full sun. Prune to remove suckers and maintain upright shape.
Propagation: Roots easily from semi-hardwood cuttings after stem elongation has ceased, under mist, in a coarse growing medium, 8000 ppm IBA.
Landscape Use: Upright habit suitable for street tree planting. Perfect tree for narrow spaces and smaller landscapes.
